Measuring Disability: Exploring the Census Bureau's Proposed Changes and Policy Implications
Date: February 22, 2024
Time: 1:00 - 2:30 PM ET
In December, we shared with you that the US Census Bureau is proposing a major change to the way it measures disability that would reduce the official disabled population count. Undercounting the disability population could have an immense impact on distribution of funding to programs that support people with disabilities.
Good data is essential to equity. And because of these proposed changes, an essential source for understanding how disability fits into our multifaceted diversity is at risk.
In partnership with the Urban Institute’s Disability Equity Policy Initiative, we invite you to join a discussion on the need for an accurate count of disabled people in the US and the policy implications of proposed changes. The event will feature remarks from Richard E. Besser, president and CEO of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and co-chair of the Presidents’ Council of the Disability & Philanthropy Forum, followed by a panel of disability experts.
Prior to the event, we encourage you to visit our resource on the proposed changes to learn more.
Live CART captioning, ASL interpretation, and autotranscription services will be provided. Please email events@urban.org if you require any additional accommodations or have any questions about the event.
